No Visitors - Except The Dogs: True Stories Of Animal-Assisted Therapy
About
Have you ever been visited by a dog while a patient in the hospital? If yes, there was a human attached to the end of that leash! That was my privilege for almost twelve years - visiting patients and hopefully making their day brighter. In addition to the hospital, I also volunteered at a public library and an elementary school. Combining all these venues together I realized there were stories to be told, and I began to write down some of the memorable visits and encounters I had with my dogs. I also asked a few fellow handlers for their stories.
You’ll read about visits with both young and old; short-term patients and patients in their final days; a visiting program for the homeless; reading times with kids; and, of course, all the dogs and handlers that made it possible. There are also tidbits of advice if you ever considered this type of volunteer work, as I spent almost seven years as a Tester/Observer for Alliance of Therapy Dogs.
Dogs just don’t live long enough - their lifespan is a fraction of ours. But the love they give is ten times as great as their years, and is reflected in the faces of the people they touched. I hope you enjoy reading their stories.
